Edge Angle

This tool is used for cleaning up burnt areas. Guidelines shown below are for Included Angles (α).

A 6" smooth cut machinist’s hand file is useful to carry with you. Use it with a draw filing approach to resharpen the shovel as needed throughout the tool's usage for the day.

A good firefighter knows how, an educated firefighter knows why.

The idea behind the 3 different angles is that each would be used for different purposes. The ideas behind those angles are noted below so that you can make decisions based on your own preferences.

α1: this is set at a good angle for using this with a swinging action, or a dragging pull.

α2: this is set at a good angle for using this with a cleaving or chopping action. The more acute angle will make this easier. Using something as shallow as 25° is not recommended as this will dull too easily.

α3: this is set at a good angle for using this with a dragging pull.

Depending on the user's handedness (left vs. right), the values for α1 & α2 could be swapped for easier use.
