Jigs for Sharpening this Tool

As noted above, this tool is typically one of the tools mounted in a Swiss Army knife. Experience has shown that the metal in these knives is easily ground. Care should be taken to not over-grind it.

Awl on end

Some variations have this tool mounted so that it opens on the end (as shown in the far left picture). Hans Kruger (Brock O Lee on the Tormek forum) noted that this can be sharpened using the Tormek SVM-00 Small Knife Holder. You should consider using the “Sharpie method” for identifying the sharpening angle.

Hans further noted that he used a Spyderco Ultrafine triangle stone for deburring, and finished with a light stropping.

If sharpening one of these tools mounted so that it projects from the side, you will probably have to sharpen this using a small, finely graded machinist’s hand file or a diamond file.

Grind Shape & Experience

The shape of the grind used is a call best made by the tool's use, based on your own experience. Additional notes are available on separate web pages for Grind Profiles, and Micro / Secondary Bevels.
